As summer begins, please take a moment to consider future opportunities for member engagement in MTA’s and NEA’s governance processes. Apart from the many opportunities through your local association, MTA holds various elections for positions at the state and national levels. Below is an overview of seats to be elected in 2027, and more detailed information can always be found online here.
In 2027, elections will be held for seats on the MTA Board of Directors to represent the following districts: 7B, 9B, 10B, 35C, 42C, 14D, 28D, 32D, 30E, 23F, 24F, 25F, 19G, 44H, 46H, 47H, and the At-Large Director for Ethnic Minority Membership on the MTA Board.
For the above seats representing the active membership, nomination papers can be obtained as of July 1 by requesting them from MTAGovernance@massteacher.org; nomination signatures are due to MTA by 5pm on Friday, March 5, 2027.
Two NEA Directors from Massachusetts will be elected in 2027. In addition, MTA can elect up to five Alternate NEA Directors in 2027 to 3-year terms. Only active (non-retired) members are eligible to run for these positions.
Nomination papers for the above can be obtained as of July 1 by requesting them from MTAGovernance@massteacher.org; nomination signatures are due to MTA by 5pm on Friday, January 8, 2027.
The 2027 Annual Meeting of Delegates will take place May 14-15 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston. The allocation of regional ethnic minority delegates is based on MTA electoral regions and equal to the number of District Directors from each region. Members may self-nominate as of November 1, 2026. For Retired Ethnic Minority Delegate positions, the nomination deadline is 5pm, Friday, Jan. 8, 2027. For Regional Ethnic Minority Delegate positions (among active members), the nomination deadline is 5pm, Friday, Feb. 5, 2027. The allocation of Statewide Retired District delegate seats will be based on the number of MTA/NEA retired members from the Statewide Retired District on record as of January 15, 2027. Retired members may access the self-nomination form as of November 1, 2026, and the nomination deadline is 5pm, Friday, Jan. 8, 2027. The NEA RA is the world’s largest democratic deliberative assembly and sets the direction for our national affiliate for the year ahead. The 2027 RA will be held June 30 - July 4 in Indianapolis, Indiana. As a state affiliate of NEA, MTA receives an allocation of delegate seats based upon state membership in January. This is in addition to NEA-RA seats allocated to local associations.
Beginning on November 1, active members may self-nominate for MTA statewide and regional delegate seats, and retired members may self-nominate for positions as retired delegates. The nomination deadline is 5pm, Friday, Jan. 8, 2027. Further information and the link to the online nomination form (when available) can be found online here.
Four seats on the MTA Retired Members Committee will be elected in 2027. Retired members may self-nominate, and the deadline to do so is 5pm, Friday, March 5, 2027. Further information and the link to the online nomination form can be found online here.
The Candidate Recommendation Committee is responsible for making recommendations to MTA members to support candidates for state and federal office. Elections will be held to fill seats representing the following Congressional districts: CD3, CD6, CD7, CD8, and CD9 (one seat each). Members who reside in these districts may self-nominate for a seat on the committee. The nomination deadline is 5pm, Monday, December 30, 2026. Election of members to the will take place at the 2027 Annual Meeting. The election will also take place at Annual Meeting, among the retired delegates.
Election of MTA’s will take place through a member-wide election, conducted online among the active membership. The election begins on the first Monday of March and ends on the third Friday of April. Election of will take place in this member-wide election with the same start and end dates.
Election of will take place among the retired membership, conducted online. Those elections begin on the first Monday of February and end on the second Friday of March.
Election of the will take place via mailed ballot among the 2026 Annual Meeting delegates who reside in the affected Congressional Districts. The election begins on the first Friday in February and ends on the last Friday in February.
